Music Week Two
What Did HappenMonday: Melton - Yvette Natalie Mck had the day off and no replacement was available. Sarah "Blondie" and Catherine came in to help, but the day was chaotic. Yvette took a relaxed attitude with the Learners which, unfortunately, was taken advantage of by many of the them. As well as the usual behaviour problems (running off around the site, not participating with activities, refusing to respond to codes of behaviour etc) there were more serious problems. There had been previous issues with Learners climbing out of windows onto a flat roof. On this day Ka smashed one of these windows. Unfortunately he was also central to an incident during lunchtime break. A worker was unsupported and left to supervise the football alone. She ended up being badly intimidated by Ka and Romeo. There was a great deal of unnecessary confusion in getting everyone to agree on the seriousness of these incidents and how to deal with them. Ka was taken to one side and the matter was discussed with him. As a consequence it was decided that he would be taken off the project for at least two days but he returned the following day. Tuesday: Melton - Carly Annable Capoeira was a challenge from the start. The Learners sat and listened to the introduction.... until they heard the words “you” and “dance”. At this point Ka, Stig and Romeo ran off around the site. Benpy sat at the edge but was unwilling to participate. The popularity of SEND and the thought of unfinished music work seemed to be part of the problem. Although that didn’t stop some Learners trying to blag access to SEND’s decks - “No, no they said we could use ‘em when they’re not here.” Suffice to say none of the workers were stupid enough to fall for this. The animation group being on site at the same time was another distraction. Romeo disappeared to chat up two girls he'd spotted around the site. Bringing them back with him to join the activity wasn’t seen as a good compromise either. Peg, Jay (and Benpy) did participate for more than 20mins and found Capoeira really enjoyable and challenging. The others were asked not to attend the following day. Wednesday: Melton - Carly Annable The end of the previous day and the start of this one, were marred by an attempt to integrate non-participators from the animation group into the Music project. Natalie Mck had to leave and sort this out. Once this had been dealt with, Stig (who had been asked not to attend) turned up. Kieran left to work with him on some music. Peg, Jay and Benpy managed to create a short Capoeira sequence and Jay performed a solo. Just as it things were looking up, Peg injured her foot and the session had to end early, without the sequences being filmed.
Thursday: Brooksby - The SEND Project This day saw a change of site to avoid clashes with the Animation group, a return of the excluded Learners and the absence of Peg and Benpy. There was good individual work done on PC tablets. Romeo was distracted, having invited one of them girls from Tuesday along to this site. Jay was distracted by personal problems, but there was also some good work done writing lyrics. SEND did a Scratching demo and some Learners worked on their DJing skills.
Friday: Brooksby - Karen Legg & Sue Whitworth Peg and Benpy were absent again. Romeo arrived solely to rendezvous with his new girlfriend and then left again. Ka, Stig and Jay enjoyed the Circus Skills and participated well. There was plenty of lively discussion during the kite making. There was kite flying and football over lunch, then, to be frank, the afternoon slowly collided with non-cooperation, distraction and disruption like a White Star liner and an iceberg. Natalie Mck and Paul got the thin end of it. |
