Visual Arts Week Three
Monday: Brooksby - Kevin Ryan Juicy and Dez were absent. The upside of this was a good Worker/Learner ratio. Kev helped JD to continue improving her photography and she and Dizzie took pictures to turn into joiners. The main problem was that a dog show was happening elsewhere on site and the excitement was too much for the Learners. They all vanished unsupervised for an hour and a half. The Workers reviewed the situation and decided to go over the group rules again each morning. Tuesday: Brooksby - Karen Legg Karen worked in difficult circumstances. Several of the Learners were in an off mood due to personal problems and this made it difficult to get more than a morning's work out of them. Despite this, the activity of making lino style printing books (using polystyrene sheets) was a good one. Both Dizzie and Juicy made good work and the IRP books were a good calming alternative to group work once again. The problem of keeping the Learners supervised was again highlighted when Hoody hurt himself playing on a fire escape. JD and Dez had left the project. Wednesday: Brooksby - Nita Rao The daily reminder of the rules helped set-up a good day. The activity of building large willow sculptures was a challenging one, particularly with the dog show still on site. However, the Learners responded well to being allowed to drive the activity themselves rather than it being lesson-like. Between them they divided up into teams, arranged a competition and negotiated with the builders to borrow some ladders. They were then allowed to make sensible arrangements to visit the dog show and did more reading.
Thursday: Brooksby - Zoe Childerly & Kevin Ryan A slim day Learner-wise with only Ka and Dizzie arriving. They worked really hard together to produce some large tiles using their own photography and painting and also working with text from the IRP book of Tupac Shakur's poems. Having less distractions allowed for a really responsible atmosphere and lunchtime football and a visit to the dog show were no problem. The lads both expressed that they enjoyed participating in the project work because, unlike school, they didn't feel forced into activities. Friday: Brooksby - Kevin Ryan Dizzie, Juicy, Ka and Hoody all came in for the final day. This was a fun, relaxed, day. There were DVD's brought in to watch, a meal together at lunch and someone had been kind enough to organise a gymkhana on site, with plenty of girls to impress. Despite all this the Learners all decided to finish off their painted tiles as well. They all participated in a Big Brother style video diary and had a little ceremony for Ka, Dizzie and Juicy to receive their IRP rewards vouchers. |
